& Job Training
Our workforce development and trade training programs are designed to equip individuals with the skills, training, and support they need to succeed in today's competitive job market. From resume building to interview preparation and job placement assistance, we provide comprehensive support every step of the way. We also provide hands-on, job training, professional development to all participants.
Economic Empowerment
& Community Building
At Urban ROOTS, we believe that economic empowerment is key to creating opportunities for individuals and fostering community growth. Through financial literacy workshops, entrepreneurship training, affordable housing initiatives, and access to resources, we empower individuals to take control of their financial futures and build wealth for themselves and their families.
Violence Intervention
& Prevention
Our efforts focus on stopping conflicts before they escalate and building long-term solutions that keep communities safe. Through street outreach, credible messengers, and mediation, we work directly with individuals at the highest risk of involvement in violence, helping to de-escalate tensions and prevent retaliation. We provide trauma-informed support, mentorship, and access to critical resources.

We were awarded two violence prevention grants to support Ashburn and Ashburn Gresham residents. Our free program provides job readiness training, employment assistance, access to vital community resources, and counseling services. If you or someone you know could benefit, sign up or refer today.
We’re also hiring for our street outreach team. If you’re well-connected, respected in the community, and committed to reducing violence, you can get paid to help mediate conflicts and promote peace.

Meshay Owens, Founder, VP & Treasurer
Meshay Owens embarked on her law enforcement journey following her graduation from the Chicago Police Academy, where she excelled as the top graduate. Beginning as a beat officer in one of the city's most challenging neighborhoods, Meshay quickly gained recognition for her courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice. Throughout her 23-year career, she held various roles, including undercover assignments and work in the narcotics unit, where she showcased exceptional investigative prowess, resolving numerous high-profile cases and bringing solace to affected families. Meshay is also the founder of Urban Roots Alliance nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals affected by crime and violence in the community.

Ishalena Moore, Co-Founder, President & Secretary
Ishalena Moore, a native of West Englewood in Chicago, stands as a beacon of resilience and service in her community. As the founder of Sparkle Palace Construction, Ishalena leads a reputable, highly accredited and award winning construction company, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety in her work as a certified home inspector and notary. Her commitment to service has garnered prestigious accolades, including a US Presidential Award for her volunteer efforts at Holy Cross Hospital. Additionally, serving as the President and Secretary of Urban ROOTS Alliance, Ishalena channels her passion into restoring hope, providing outreach, and equipping communities with the tools for survival.

Dennis Shegog, Board Member

Beyond his professional endeavors, Dennis is deeply engaged in community outreach and advocacy, serving as a board member of Urban ROOTS Alliance.
